Question:

Adductor - help

Hi

I damaged my adductor quite a while ago and everytime I think it’s better I go and damage it again – not exactly sure how I did it in the first place though…

I used to do Kickboxing and I must have overstretched it ??
From what I understand – most muscles work when they stretch, but the Adductor work’s in the opposite way – it contracts to avoid you overstretching – or at least something like that ?

When it happened I thought it was the hamstring and went to physio who told me it was the adductor - and gave me a few exercises to do to try and strengthen it –
When I thought it was better I went to kickboxing again and took it easy and went for a roundhouse and .. PAIN !!
“when in the round house kick position = just a burning/sharp pain in the adductor region.”

I have now not done any KB for about 3 months at least , but also no other exercises and the last few days I have felt a slight twinge in the adductor/hamstring area.
I went to a physio on Wednesday, but I do feel that it didn’t really help, but have 2 further appointments next week.

AND on top of this - I think I've got a groin strain too... I'm falling apart !

Can anyone suggest anything ?
Suggest a good physio / sprecialist to go to in the London SE1 area ?

thanks

Hello kickboxer.

The adductors contract (shorten)and the abductors lengthen to bring the leg in to the midline of the body. The opposite occurs when the abductors shorten and the adductors lengthen to bring the leg away to the outside of the body.
The rehabilitation of a pulled muscle can take quite a time (depending on the seriousness of it).
The first thing to do when a muscle injury happens is to apply ice-cold compress to halt the internal bleeding and bring down the swelling. There should rest be given to the limb for 72 hrs. treating it with the ice-cold compress for 20mins. Every3-4 hrs.

Then stretching should begin, very easy and cautiously at first, no quick movements.
What you are looking for is a gradual build up of contraction and stretching of the muscle. This is so that the muscle fibres do not heal with a scar, if they do there will be no stretch there and it will rupture again. You will have a re-occurring injury that will forever plague you.

Don’t think that because you feel no pain, even with a kick or two that everything is all right. Go easy for a time and remember to do resistance (progressive resistance) and stretching exercises.
All round body resistance exercises are a necessity to any martial artist if they want to remain injury free. I suggest also after the injury is cleared up, that you do dynamic stretching pre training/competition.

as you didnt rehab the injury prpoerly you probably have a poorly formed scar and a shortened adductor, so when you try a kick through your old range of movement you simply pull it again. find a good sports masseur who may be able to perform a technique called transverse frictions. this reinjures the muscle, giving you a chance to rehab it properly leaving you with much better formed scar tissue. this is a last resort treatment, but it sounds like youve tried everything else. just remember that you can never get rid of scar tissue, all you can do is remodel it so that it functions better.

Sorry for the late post, only joined the forum yesterday. Hopefully your adductor is feeling much better, but if it isn't I would suggest you go and see an active release techniques provider in london, think there are three/four listed on the website http://www.activerelease.com/providersearch.asp, I would recommend Dr Daniel Voth in the city centre.
Active Release is very effective for chronic muscle injuries, most problems resolve in 6-8 sessions.
Best of luck with your recovery
