A click in a joint is either a tendon flicking in an out of it's groove ( not as painfull or scary as it sounds) or it's the "pressure" being relieved from the joint. When a joint is held in one position for too long the pressure builds up in the joint, a movement in a certain way will allow the pressure to release thus causing the "click".
However occationally if the click is more like a "clunk" and is painfull it could be down to a "maltracking" of a joint and may need further input / rehab from a physiotherapist. Hope that helps!!
I have the same problem with my ankle it clicks constantly. I am not able to sneak up on people. It is from the tendon moving, I saw my doctor about it and he said as long as it was not painful there was not a real problem
