Question:

Any athlete here has experience with Astaxanthin?

It seems this "new" carotenoid (astaxanthin) is the best for enhancing health and performance with basis on its unique properties, I need to confirm with experiences before I order some product. Tks

Astaxanthin is an anti-oxidant. These fight free radicals which are cell-killing structures that are produced through normal metabolism and especially through exercise. Exercise is the biggest producer of these free radicals and they need to be depleted as to stop the ageing process along with a few other biological reasons.

Try 'Ultralife' Antioxidants... this has all the natural needed

Well, all this kind of products claim to be the "highest" in the world. We found the following info for Astaxanthin (natural product from algae):

"Natural Astaxanthin has proven to be the world’s strongest antioxidant. Here are a few of the test results:

Astaxanthin antioxidant strength was 550 times stronger than vitamin E in singlet oxygen quenching.
Astaxanthin was 11 times stronger than beta-carotene in singlet oxygen quenching.
Astaxanthin was 3 times stronger than Lutein as an antioxidant targeting singlet oxygen.
Natural Astaxanthin was 14.3 times stronger than vitamin E as a free radical scavenger.
BioAstin® was 17 times stronger than Pycnogenol©.
20.9 times stronger than Synthetic Astaxanthin.
53.7 times stronger than beta-carotene.
64.9 times stronger than Vitamin C."

I noticed this product is used by some triathletes.

And now there is other newest product called "Moxxor", from New Zealand, which claims to be the best Omega'3s and antioxidants source.

Extremely interesting information.

Although I can't possibly see that there's any benefit to an athlete? Does this help physiologically in any way? Or would this be more for general health improvement?

Astaxanthin, like beta-caratine and lutein, is one of the caritenoids. They all have anti-oxident properties, but they also all have slightly different effects. If you really want to know about them go to Pub Med (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed) and look them up. You will find study results explaining what they really have been proven to do. From what I can see, there is no "best" one, but you should eat foods that give you a good mixture. If you feel the need to supplement. than consider vitamin c as it is water soluble, so you can't od. You can od on vitamin a and derivatives.

It seems it would have different effects depending on personal health/athletic deficiencies/status, specially oxidative stress.

Also the supplier makes a Big difference between natural and syntethic sources (the natural one comes with some synergist nutrients instead alone). Yes, we can not trust in "only one" product, we must have a balanced diet.

I think the best reference is oneself testing (that is the question above).
