Andre on Facebook says, 'It would be a good idea to join a running club or seek advice from a personal trainer skilled in running ..'
Here's some advice from Debbie, ' Start with a warm up first for 5 to 10mins of brisk walking then go into a slow jog & work yourself up gradually to running. When your ready to start your cool down gradually decrease running back into a jog for 5 to 10mins. Then do some stretching for 5mins.'
and this from @condo270 on Twitter, 'start slow and build up your running times slowly this will help reach achievable goals and reduce injury risks'
I started running in July last year, while I am a keen keep fit individual aged 62, I increased my walking as part of my goal to keep weight off. I have type 2 diabities and weight control in particular around belly and hips are vital. To be honest I bored very quickly with walking and commenced to jog lightly, using lamp posts as markers. Run then walk then run, using lamp posts, soon I was running 2 walking 1 and then stopped walking altogether. In September I entered my first ever running competition, which was 12.2 kms. I ran it in 78 minutes (6.3minutes per km). Since then I have continued to run at least twice per week and last week entered a 10 week Corporate Cup run, the course is 4.6kms and my time was 25 minutes (5.4 minutes per km) next month I will run in the 12.2 km race and my target is to drop my time by 10 minutes. I strongly suggest you buy a very good pair of runners, get your feet measured. My warm up is 5 minutes skipping, a new skill I learned in the past year, then gentle stretching. I have read too many bad things about stretching "cold" muscles.I lik emusic, so I invested in an IPod and downloaded the Nike app which tells you time distance etc!
Hope this helps
Thanks for the reply Adeleaidered, much appreciated.
