In terms of a cheap way to improve your vertical;start training to jump vertically from the balls of your feet. (The padded portion of your foot near your toes) Start with a small number of repitions, then gradually build on the repitions. JUMP STRAIT UP AS HARD AS YOU CAN--LAND ON THE BALLS OF FEET AS CONTROLLED AS POSSIBLE, OTHERWISE YOU MAY RISK INJURY! (Look for results in three to four weeks with two to three sets of repitions two to three day per week).

Another exercise much like CoachMaxx's is -
From the position of a lunge (say right leg forward and left leg backwards) jump up and land back in the lunge position with the position of the legs reversed (left leg forward and right leg to the rear).

lose weight find things to jump on. in high school we had boxes made of ply-wood and 2x4's about three feet or 1.5 meters tall we would jump up on one side jump down to the side to the right or left then jump up on that side and continue around the box.

Plyometric workouts work very well. do box jumps and also side to side jumps for a minute at a time. calf raises are also really good workout. The best excersize though is squats.
