Ultimately the protein shakes will provide you with additional calories, so if you are not undertaking a strengthening programme to use up these excess calories and turn the protein into muscle then you would put on weight.
Submitted 49 weeks 2 days ago by lchimi10It's really as simple as calories in / calories out. So if you have a protein shake instead of something else with the same amount of calories, you won't put on weight. It can be good to replace less healthy snacks with protein because protein satiates hunger for longer and helps maintain muscle mass. But if you have protein shakes in addition to a normal diet, you are likely to put on weight unless you are exercising.

Your body uses it as food. If you eat more calories than you consume, then you will store the extra. I personally eat protein bars for breakfast, not because I workout alot(I do, but not crazily)but because it is food and I like it.

The simple answer is that you will gain weight.

It will if you consume alot. Look at the calories label on your protein shake to know how much calories u are consuming. Bottomline, you are wasting good money spend on the protein if you don't work out. Otherwise you are consuming some heatlthy calories at worst.

Some interesting answers.....
Even though you have been told there is a 'simple' answer, unfortunately there is not one.
Clearly it depends on a large number of factors that require an understanding of what you are taking in and what your body will do with it...
'Protein shakes' do not always just contain protein and therefore the type you use will affect you in different ways.
Instead of me replying with 1001 answers as to what might happen... I'll ask you a question..
Why would you 'take' protein shakes if you were not working out?

I agree with Martin. There are a lot of varieties of shakes out there. I try to use ones that have both a lower carb % and lower calories as I try to keep within certain parameters (Less than 35% Carbs, Greater than 35% protein and less than 30% fat)...but I am not a bodybuilder, so levels for other sports will vary.
Short answer though, as noted above, more in and less out the more weight you gain.

That's a good question. As far as i know surplus of proteines will go out the natural way, but protein shakes doesn't just include proteines so besides that i think you'll gain weight !!
