Question:

I put on weight - is it muscle?

This week i have put on 1lb in weight but my Body Fat % has gone down by 0.5%. is this good and is this muscle or fat? i have been working out 3 times a week with cardio, weights, and ab exercises aswell as eating about 150g of protein each day. Also, what does my BF% need to be to look toned?

Your body can take 2.5 - 3.5 kilos of pure muscle per year under extremly great training and specific diet IF you are a very well trained person and of course IF you are bellow 30-35 years old.Even though the weight you have put on is protein (a small amount)a significant amount is water.

I'm unsure of how your response can be SO specific 'stamina'...........???

Jan - Over one week you would be hard pushed to put on 1lb of muscle..... however this does not neccessarily mean it is fat.

how are you measuring bodyfat? A decrease of .5% means nothing as the accuracy of individual measurement is too innacurate to show a change that small.

It depends whether you are male of female as to the bodyfat you need to attain to look 'toned' it also depends on other factors... thus making body fat a rather arbitrary figure for your goals.

I was reading this with interest, having just run a search on weight gain; I can't answer your question but was wondering if you (or anyone else) can help - I go to the gym 2 - 3 times a week and started about 12 weeks ago. I am female, 5'6" and my weight was 138 lbs when i started. I work long hours and have young children, and about 8 months ago started a pretty sedentary office job and could begin to feel weight creeping on. So - I joined the gym and have been religiously running, cycling, cross-trainering and rowing for 2 hours 2-3 times per week. I swim with the kids 2 times a week and am moderately active when out of the office (dog walking, etc.)and I thought the gym would help me turn from reasonably trim into a toned goddess.

To my horror (!!) I weighed myself yesterday and found I have actually put on weight - i am now 146lbs. I nearly cried! I am not eating more than usual.

I realise that I have probably built SOME muscle but nowhere near 8 lbs of the stuff; my boyfriend says to keep going, muscle weighs more than fat, etc etc but to be honest I now feel like a whale.

Any ideas about the weight gain? Am I doing the wrong kind of exercise? Help!
