Give up on doing press-ups in bulk or singularly? If you cannot manage a single press-up, you need to work on your pectoral strength, which can be accomplished by working with truncated press-ups (based off your knees instead of feet, etc.)
If you can manage at least one, do as many as you can until you achieve muscle failure (even a few is fine) and rest for 45-75 seconds, then repeat 2-3 times.

To get good at press ups you have to do pressups. Being in the army we do them alot. In basic training to assist with a press up a good training aid is a fitness elastic band. One of the long ones. To do an assisted push up stand within a smith machine or power rack and tie one end of the band to the left hand side of the rack securely the other band end to the right hand side. place your chest against the middle of the band either side of the rack. Now safely lower yourself into the press up position in the rack. Now is the time to adjust the taughtness of the band to ensure that when you are in the press up position the band will assist you corectly in the push up portion. each week slowly slacken of the band resistance against your body and in no time you will be doing them without the band. Good luck. At the same time concentrate on tricep and shoulder strength to build the supporting muscles for the press up.
