Question:

When should Creatine be taken, before or after training?

I am a 38yr old athelte who is starting to take creatine to improve my training and performance, as I have read that Creatine should be used as a suppliment for older athletes.

Pity you have not given a reason for not using creatine. A rather unhelpful was to express an opinion....

James - as a maintenance dose of creatine it probably does not matter a great deal wheher you take creatine before or after your session. Taking it after is possibly the most convenient time to take it with your recovery shake/meal.

If you have a second spare of liver and kidneys then you should take creatine about an hour before night sleep and in the morning when you wake up.....

I just notice that u are 38 old and you are talking about increasing performance by using creatine and other supplements. But first let me inform you that the human body after the age of 32-35 starts to lose muscle bulk (especially in men) and bone(bone recomposing becomes slower) mass(especially in women) every 5 year about 10%,so the train you are doing is to prevent or delay it.Think all that....OK? Now think what is going to happened to your poor liver and kidneys? I don't want to terrify you but thats the the way things are...

what type of training are you doing?

I take a few grams before (with a potein/carb drink) and after training. THis has helped my CCT training strength and stamina and also my running endurance/power. Try a few grams to start with. I take a pre training product called N O EXPLODE, which has creatine in it, this works for me but you have to find a product thatworks for you. Try a product that includes creatine and one that is not purley creatine (i.e. only creatine monohydrate powder)as absorbtionis poor. creatine really needs to be taken with protein and carbs for a better uptake ability. Dont forget to drink plenty of water. cheers

As I understand it, creatine allows an athlete to increase the capacity of their immediate energy system-the phosphocreatine system (ATP-PCR system). The idea is that creatine supplementing will enhance high intensity exercise training and improve the effectiveness of the workout. In a nutshell, I see no reason to take creatine after a workout.

Creatine is now widely recommended as a pre-workout supplement. It should be taken 30 minutes or so before exercise and is best if combined with a protein and carbohydrate drink. More modern creatine ethyl-ester is absorbed better. Many answers make reference to the damage of creatine to your liver and kidneys - yet no study ever performed on creatine has proved a link with creatine use and damage to these organs - some have now been conducted over 10 years. As long as you use any produce sensibly and within guidelines it should not have a negative health effect on you. Lets face it we all get creatine anyway from our food and our liver and kidney copes!!!
