Question:

Sports Science Degree-related work

Has anyone here got an honours in sport and exercise science, or health and exercise science or any other similar degree ?? If so, have you got progressed more than if you had not had a degree ?? Please don't give political answers as i know you have debt and it looks good on your CV... just is it worth having for your job please, thanks.

I did a BSc and MSc and now work as a lecturer at a HE college teaching everything from NVQ L1 (e.g. fitness stuff) up to undergrad degree stuff.

But in between my undergrad and post grad I worked in the fitness industry for 4 years getting employment experience. I think that’s the best way into working in this industry.

but its all about who you know, not what you know!

I kinda get that impression of who not what you know. Thanks for your input Alex I am so looking forward having been accepted to read it at edge hill. Can't wait to get it done now :)

another one of us then? Welcome to the club.

What route are you looking to specialize in?

physiology, biomechanics, S+C, nutrition, psychology? Or have you not thought that far ahead.

To be honest, if you want to work in SES in any capacity (even with your past experience) you will probably need an MSc as well (unless you know someone in a position of power, or if you were an elite athlete.)

What, you went to Edge Hill as well ?? Bloody good uni isn't it. Shame about the pool. Ha ha. I have been thinking about it qiute a lot actually.

I am interested in the health related side as i am a qualified wright foundation instructor and find that so much more satisfying than normal PT'ing. Though I am fascinated by the applied sport sciences side too.

I will have to do some pre-course catch up on biomechanics as its been a while. I like the thought of working with people who need to train, i.e. athletes or medical patients, rather than the cash-flashing middle aged clients PTs normally get.

Probably will do a Masters, like everything isn't it... you need to be a step ahead. Im gonna do my athletics coaching awards to compliment it and see if i can do something through the UKA. Edge Hill has applied to be a training camp for the 2012 Olympics so hopefully that will throw up some experience too :)

What do you make of BASES ? Have they stood you in good stead for employment or furthering your knowledge ??
