Question:

did working out early stunt my growth?

i'm a 15yr old girl and I've been working out for years! all my mates and everyone are taller then me and every time i question it, people have told me that working out (with weights that are way above average for girls my age)has stunt my growth! iv also been told it could just be genetics, but all my family are normal height, in fact a lot of them are really tall! i warm up warm down stretch and everything! so is it really working out that is stunting my growth?

There is some reasearch to show that doing heavy weight training at a young age will stunt your growth. However, a recent PP article indicated that this was not the case (though I cannot find it at the moment. With other sporting activities, I would say that it is unlikely to have stunted your growth and either you are going to have a relatively late growth spurt for a female or you may be small because of your genes

Your growth might stopped early, or you might still have one or two years to grow. you are still young and it depends on your biological age and not on your chronological age.A dentist or a pediatrician could inform you about that. Height depends on your genes. Weight training can be beneficial for every kid, when it takes place between some standards. It helps you build a strong body and enhances your skeleton mass.Make sure that your training did not involve heavy weights and that you never got injured because of that training and that will mean that this kind of training did not effect your height.

I've practiced gymnastics from an early age, when I gave up I was 10-11, and short, because of the intensity of the practices. After giving up the sport I experienced a +20 cm growth in less than 2 years, that means that muscular training in early ages really influences the way of growth.

Recent research says weight training for youths is safe. Providing that the focus is on technique education, weights remain light and that youth are learning with Professionals and not just cracking out reps on their own or with mom/dad.
