Question:
Broken Wrist Recovery
Hi, I currently have a broken wrist caused by a football injury and will have a cast on it for 4 weeks. What period of time would you suggest for recovery once the cast has been removed. I would like to go skiing and would be wearing a suitable sports injury wrist support.

RoddyB,
I am a physical therapist and when you start rehab for a broken bone look at 8 weeks minimum from initial break for the bone to set. That means light motion and symptom control until the bone heals, then coordination and muscle recruitment can start after 8 weeks.
There are several alternative methods of rehab that, when combined with physical therapy, can improve the prognosis and decrease healing time.
I broke my 3rd metacarpal bone in my hand and had 4 pins placed on August 31st, 2007. By October 10th, 2007 I was at 85% strength and full motion with the ability to complete a century ride on my road bike and a half marathon 3 weeks after that with no pain. I returned to full and unrestricted weight training by the first week of November.
Hope this helps. Best Wishes.
