Question:

Gaining muscle with explosive training?

I've noticed that people who run a marathon are very skinny and have no fat, but sprinters have huge muscles.
Do sprinters have these muscles because they need energy very fast?
If so, would it be possible to gain muscle but stay agile as a martial artist by doing a lot of interval training?

thanks a lot

Just noticed the same thing; would you rather the physique of Christie/Allan Wells or Ovett/Paula Radcliffe? It seems like a very thin line between fit and fit-to-drop; no longer sure if long-distance running should be encouraged, let alone state-sponsored.

Long distance runners have lesser muscle because too much muscle add to their bulk whereas sprint runners need the muscle for explosive speed because strength helps increase speed and explosivness.

Sprinters have larger muscles, mainly due to their type of training as opposed to long distance or endurance based athletes. This is because explosive sprint athletes have a predominantly higher proportion of fast twitch II type muscle fibres these are larger & thicker than say slow-twitch muscle fibres of which endurance athletes tend to develop.
Interval training depending on what type, can improve enhancement of the recruitment of motor units that activate the fast-twitch muscle fibres, especially short high intensity bursts. This can help the body to burn more fat. However in order to enhance performance in sport it is important to take into account power to weight ratio. In order to gain lean muscle mass without gaining too much weight & enhance your performance, then muscle density rather than muscle hypertrophy(size & growth) is whats required. Low volume - high intensity resistance training i.e. 2 sets of 4-6 reps of 5-6 exercises in gym & should be completed in 40 min max in order to avoid any cortisol(fat enhancing hormone) build up is suffice. Hope it has answered your questions & sorry if it's too much detail.
