one tip i can give is to go slower on straights so you can go up and down hills with no problems and start over taking people.
A good way to train for this is altitude training because the higher up you go the less oxygen there is and it makes it harder to run and your lungs get more effecient with oxygen and that will help with all of the hills in cross country races.
long runs at least 2 times per week will be helpful. speed workout will also be needed to help quicken up the racing pace.
