Question:

What is a good training program for a 48 hour, 100km walk?

I'm looking at undertaking a 100km walk, which must be completed in 48 hours,in about 10 months time. My aim is to complete the walk in about 30 hours. I would like to use a periodised training program to adequately prepare myself for the walk. I'd like to include a combination of resistance and cardio work over the next 10 months to make sure I'm in the right condition. I'm male, 39 years old, been undertaking a resistance and cardio lifestyle for the past 10 years and I am in excellent health. Any ideas you could suggest would be greatly appreciated.

Hello there. Being ex-army i can tell you one thing. You will be looking for a different challenge once completed! It is not just a matter of fitness, its mental toughness, keeping yourself hydrated and fuelled and i am assuming its a team thing. so making you give and receive encouragement from others is going to be paramount also.

GET OUT THERE

An educated guess tells me you're going to be carrying about 30kg (water, food, sleeping systems etc) and you're carrying that over 100km which in English is 62.14 miles.

Thats 32 miles a day and at 4 miles per hour thats going to take you 8 hours. Carol Vorderman who ??? So basically start off carrying your essentials for a walk and increase your time from say 2 hours to 2.5 hours and increase it by half an hour each week until you reach 8 hours. then start again but increase your weight. You have got 4 cycles (of 2 to 8 hours) before u do the big challenge.

Also, circuit training and running/cycling will help with your fitness. Try and avoid too much running as this will have too much stress on your knees if you're going to hill walk as well.

More importantly, get some lessons in map and compass use. I can remember a bit but once you're on the hills its completely different trust me.

Enjoy the experience, it will be one you remember!
