Question:

How can I reduce my body fat without reducing my body weight?

I am female, 29 years old, I have an extremely busy job so I don't get to train as often as I would like. I have a fairly heathly diet. Breakfast is normally porridge with a banana (Mon-Fri). On weekends I have bowl of alpen with fruits mainly banana. During the week my mid morning snack is fruit tea with 2 or 3 rivitas or some almonds nuts. Lunch is salad with bits of tuna, chicken and prawns. Dinner is normally pasta or rice with chicken or fish. I was having protein shakes for about 4 weeks but stopped as I was not seeing the benefits of having it and was told it is not good for women. I don't fry my foods. My current weight is 52kg, and body fat is approx 27%. I would like to reduce my body fat to 18%. Do you think it is possible to achieve this by end of July 2008 and how do I go about achieving this goal?

Hi there,

My initial reaction is that you are eating loads of protein!

Your body cannot deal with more than 20g in any 3-4 hours and any excess will be stored as fat. You might need more than 3 meals a day, which is where a protein shake might come in.

You don't mention what exercise you do, but resistance training will increase the amount of energy your body needs which you are doing nothing (energy used will be fat) and because muscle weighs 3 times more than fat, your weight should not change either.

Good luck - and please get in touch if you need any help!

Best wishes,

Heather

What is your Cardio and Resistance training like?

I wouldn't give up on the protein shake. If you do make sure you supplement another mid afternoon snack in it's place.
What type of protein shake are you consuming? There's nothing wrong w/ Females having a protein shake! All of my women clients have a protein shake, if not daily as a mid afternoon snack then especially post workout.
Try to always eat a protein w/ carb's (not just carb's alone)!
9% in 2 1/2 mos. is possible but likely not practical!
