Question:

How do you treat shin splints

I recently acquired shin splints from overtraining on cement ie running. I'm a diehard soccer player, and having shin splints is a major killer on my part. How do you treat shin splints? Rest? Ice? Stretch? How and what?
I'd appreciate any help. Thanks a million.

Hi, the best way is to use a resistance band. Hook the band up to a stationary object and then slip your foot through it while you are sitting on the floor. Then proceed to flex your foot against the band. With this and ice, you should be healed in no time!

Since shin splints are an overuse injury, the first step is to remove the cause of the tissue irritation. In this case, it would be the running.

The next step would be deal with the inflammatory condition (if any exists) with ice, compression and elevation.

The final step would be to rehabilitate the area using appropriate exercises, when it's sufficiently recovered from the trauma.

Hope that helps.
