Exercise, exercise and more exercise! It's all about muscle recruitment. Exercise during for the particular sport, weight exercise (slow repetitions) would ultimately improve strength throughout the full range of motion the most.

When you train with weights, you recruit motor units which get impulses from the brain. Basically the heavier or more intense the exercise, the more motor units you use.

This will also recruit the central nervous system, meaning that you will be more able to perform 'motor skills', balance, coordination, agility and have more efficient movement, therefore using less energy.
