Question:
How does a PT overcome fear?
Hi All!!
I'm new to world of Pt's. I've now got my qualifications but am to scared to go ahead and find my clients. I can't work in a gym as I have 3 kids and don't want to do gym hours, so my plan was to start up my own small business doing outdoor circuit training. I totally love it as a form of exercise but can't seem to overcome my fear of failure!
Hopefully someone out there has something inspiring and encouraging for me?
Thanks Heaps!

Hello there chicola... we all started off in th same position as you. nobody knows what they are doing the very first time they start thats how they learn!!!
Use a line like "don't feel nervous if this is your first session... 'cos it's mine as well." or "That makes two of us."
if you want to do a circuit class, then make your first class a replica of a circuit you have done yourself in the past. That way you know how it is going to run and what order you want your exercises etc.
I used to use circuits from when i was in the army and used these to challenge my class members.
Once you get more confidence you will experiment more with supersets and to use a bit more time you can have active recoveries in between such as jumping jacks or high knees etc.
Good luck and throw yourself in there.

I have worked with and hired many PT's during my career, so have plenty of advice to give, Chicola!
First of all you say you have 3 children, so can't commit to a regular job? No problem!
Most gyms and health clubs provide a class service to their members - this is your way in. They will often employ external instructors to take their classes. You can offer to teach a circuit class once or twice per week - most places will pay around £15+ per hour for an instructor. Approach all the gyms you can - the more options you have, the better. You can always reject places if they don't feel right.
The class teaching (especially circuits) has two major benefits - circuits will give you a chance to practice teaching people and will give you the opportunity to teach a variety of techniques. The second, more important benefit is that the class will introduce you to lots of potential clients! As soon as you build up a reputation as a great instructor people will pay to come your classes!
The progression from here is that you see clients on a one-to-one basis, and you expand your classes to the point where you instruct maybe a class per day that you fit in and around your schedule. Turn yourself into a brand - offer classes and PT and you will soon build up a business, providing you are good enough (and I am sure you are!)

Instead of feeling afraid, why not advertise to people like yourself. Create a target audience - Mothers, childminders etc. who you'll have something in common with, who you can feel comfortable with and break the ice, as they're in the same situation as you. Embrace your fears and look at it as passing on relevant skills and techniques to help people. Don't look at it as you up on your own, with blank faces looking at you, as it can often feel like at times! Turn the situation round to your advantage. Always make sure you're in your own comfort zone so that you are confident in what you're teaching. And remember, keep smiling!
