Question:
How much effect does carrying weight effect cycling?
I ride to and from uni, work, etc. I carry clothes, a towel, etc. in a backpack that would weigh about 8kg I also have a bike that weighs 13kg. I was looking a getting a racing bike and was wondering what sort of improvement I can expect from going from a hybrid to a racing bike and not carrying weight? I usually average about 25-28km/h for a 20km ride. Also is it better to stick with carrying the extra weight to strengthen my legs and improve my aerobic fitness?

Saving weight will make a big difference to you if you have a hilly ride, and if it invlovles any stoping and starting. Theses are the situations that you will notice carrying excess weight. If you went from a hybrid to a top end racing bike it would make a big difference both physically and in your head. (60% of cycling is in the head). With a racing bike and without the weight you will feel awesome. With regards to improving fitness by carrying weight, if you loose the weight you can cycle just as hard but just go faster.
