Question:

I'm looking for suggestions on how to avoid injury while training for soccer.

I'm trying to incorporate all the good elements of training into my program including; weight training, plyometrics, sprinting, endurance (aerobic and anaerobic), as well as soccer skill training and playing. I have been trying to do all of these for a long time, but end up getting injured and overtraining a lot of the time, which forces me to start over. Is there a good way to balance these during my week to maximize their effectiveness but not leave me injured? Thanks.

I may just need to shorten my soccer playing sessions.

Hi Rogue5ster,

Sorry to hear you are experiencing difficulties with your training.

Are there any specific injuries you are experiencing- injuries that are reoccurring?

If we can highlight the problem areas it will be easier to help tackle your issues.

Kind Regards

It's almost always in my hips, hip flexors, and quads. The main two injuries are a strained quad and strained hip flexor, on separate legs. I think my problem before was a lack of a good warm up and cool down/stretching.

Thanks

Definitely warm up and cool down is vital to staying healthy in your training. I think a few other questions to ask yourself are:

Are you taking at least 1 day per week for recovery activities/rest??

Are you getting proper treatment (physio, athletic therapy) or at least allowing your injuries to properly heal prior to moving back into your training?

Are you varying your weekly workouts with high intensity workouts, and some lower intensity workouts?

Are you varying your training volume in-season?

Have you explored additional recovery/prevention techniques? (Yoga, foam roller, massage therapy, rest/ice, heat prior to training... etc...)
