Question:
back of knee / inside knee pain
i recently started running more milage so i guess this could just be too much training too quickly, from 10-20km a week to 40-50km... i have pain on the inside and back of my left knee. it worst when i stand from kneeling or after sitting on a chair for period of time, and i have slight discomfort when i walk. interestingly when i run there is virtually no pain and i dont notice it. i have shifted my stride to be more of a mid sole striker rather than heel but then my right side is perfectly fine. it doesnt feel muscular. i had no pain at all cycling. Any ideas? thanks

How quickly did you increase your mileage? As a guide Id always say you shouldnt be increasing your training by more than 10% within a 1-2week period so it may be worth cutting your training down initially then gradually building back up again.
However, the way your pain present is unusual. You'd expect pain with walking to increase when you run.
If you dont feel your symptoms improve with changing your mileage then get seen by a decent sports physio just to rule out any serious knee problems
P.S also make sure you are stretching regularly and always complete a sufficient warm-up/cool down.

This sounds almost exactly what I've got and the bad news is that it's osteoarthritis caused by the way your kneecap tracks. The good news is that it's treatable.

You also might find you have flat or incorrectly pronating feet, for which a podiatrist can prescribe inserts for your shoes.
The weird thing about this one is that it doesn't feel like it's caused by the kneecap but right in the back of the knee.
Having said all this, don't leap into doing exercises based on what I've said - you need someone to examine you who knows what they are doing! It does sound like what I've got - almost exactly but for all I know you could have a dart in the back of your knee!
Mine is a lot better after exercise and the shoe implants.

I had similar problems returning to sport after having children and my physio suggested compressive knee supports during training sessions to help knee joints regain strength, improved flexibility and reduce strain. The best supports I used were thermomedic therapy garments knee bands because they provided compressive support as well as soothing warmth from the bio-ceramic fibres and they allow your skin to breath. Wetsuit style braces made me sweat and caused a rash at the back of my knee and some were just really expensive and didn't work. I struggled to find the right product so I hope this information helps you to keep on running. You can find out more info from http://www.thermomedic.com

This could be as stated above osteoarthritis or it could be inflamation of your posterior cruciate and lateral ligaments due to overuse.
You may find that you don't feel any pain when running due to the chemical endorphine which is produced when exercising it has the general makeup as morphine in that it is a painkiller and give s a sense of euphoria.
i imagine you have checked your running action ie if your over pronate or supanate your ankle joint when running. if not get it checked out and get the right insoles in your trainers that counteract it.
Good luck keep clocking those miles up

Just wanted to say I have exactly the same symptoms: Discomfort in back of knee especially after kneeling or sitting. Doesn't really bother me when running. I have increased my mileage to train for marathon (but I do this every year). I've been taking a lot of yoga classes which I think has caused me to overstretch the ligament.
