Question:

Lack of questions on this page...

Why is nobody asking any more questions ?? Nobody knows everything, so get on here and learn from others. Okay I will start the ball rolling...

Does anybody think body image has overtaken sports participation. By this I mean, most of the people in the gym I work at do pretty much the same thing every week. They will go in do their routine, buy their protein supplement and then shower. Does anybody know of any gym members that will actually do some motor skills, active stretching or incorporate some sport-specific drills into their workout ???

Please leave your comments and thoughts... let's all have a good think, cos i reckon this might help in finding new athletes out there.

Well, I would expect more analysis and discussion on this page, I think this is one reason.
Gym without mirrors is not a gym, you will find different thinking people outside.

What about you, why not post more questions? Other people here need of your background.

In my experience, knowing both those who use gyms and those who don't go near them, the majority of people in a gym (unless it's a more specialized gym) do not engage in sports in any meaningful way. They are there for what they see as fitness purposes. Any serious athletes I know are much less fouces on gym works - a semi pro cyclist from my area wouldn't even know where the gym was.

So, I think that yes, body image has become more of a pre-occupation for the majority of people. They do the same routine, which by the time they've been going for 3 months no longer stresses their bodies and all adaptations cease and they are merely in a maintenance phase.

Gym coaches should know the interests/needs of other sports people when they look for strength, technique, avoid injuries..., sure they would like more the gyms.
People generally think gyms are only for body shaping, so gym coaches must specialize on different sporting matters and change that idea.
I think PP is very good for this purpose.

I think it largely depends on they type of gym you visit.

A run-of-the mill gym will have the mixture of members training in every way possible, and that is the market they cater for. It is rare you would find a serious athlete training there. Perhaps this is the reason you wouldn't find many people working on sport-specific stuff - the sports specific people aren't training there!

I think there are more and more groups starting up that are challenging the '3 sets of 10' methods of training, and that is a great thing as far as I am concerned. Now we know more than ever about exercise science we can push the boundaries of fitness development, bringing about training methods that people not only gain results from, but actually enjoy doing! Hopefully the days of exercising because you have to rather than because you want to are soon to be a thing of the past!

It's up to us as fitness professionals to keep exploring new frontiers!

I do gym inductions for students and most seldom make regular return visits. A few follow my programmes or another programme and hardly any play regular sports. The schedules they follow use many of the professional bodybuilders exercises without the intensity(or the weight, obviously). Very little attention is paid to maintaining good form and the crunch or similar is the only abs exercise which is done, hardly need to visit a gym to do that. Very little core stability work is done.

Yes the gym is used for cosmetic reasons, rather than performance.
