Question:

Lower back pain

I'm having problems with a constant numb pain in my lower back. It sometimes feel as if it's coming from my hamstrings. It gets worse after more intense running sessions. I'm taking 2 x Norflex Co tablets when it gets too bad, but am hoping someone could possibly help me get rid of it in cleverer fashion - possibly an exercise that could help? Much appreciated.

your core may be weak and need strengthening up as all the impact from running is causing you a problem. some simple exercise such as the pilates based ' plank hold ' and some back extensions should help. do high reps on the extensions e.g 20-25 and 3 sets. it would also be recommended to do a full warm up and stretching routine ocussing on low back and hamstrings before each workout.

hi please be careful with doing the back extension exercises. I'm a sports physiotherapist and you'd be suprised how often people misinterpret the role back extensions have to play in the strengthening of back muscles - this is a problem I have to explain to GP's! I'd really recommened you go and see a chartered physiotherapist and get assessed, the problem with back extension exercises is that if you have a "give" (one joint too mobile) it will exacerbate your problem big style. just try triggering your "trans abs" and "pelvic floor" before even contemplating the more advance core exercises - i don't work for these guy's but there core programme book speaks a lot of sense. hope this helps

If it does not hurt to walk, take a daily walk. If you have a job were you sit or do not move much, get up and stretch often.
