Question:

Sustained high heart rate

I posted this as a comment to one of the articles but here is probably more appropiate:
I ran a half marathon at the weekend wearing a heart monitor, I averaged a very steady 193 beats/min (96%, just 10 off my max) for the duration (1h31). Even in the last three mile i was able to maintain post 190 beats/min. This seems very high, Is this unusual? my resting heartrate is in the 40's and i am 21.

It does seem odd to me. Your max HR is probably an age-predicted one, right? You must remember that using that scale is innacurate. the scale is to be viewd on a spectrum. This is because the age-predicted Hr max wasdetermined using averages from several hundred or thousand individuals. The only way to truly find your HR max is to perfomr a graded exercise test to find your VO2max and observe your HR at your VO2max.

One thing that does puzzle me is your low resting HR, and the fact that you do run and race long distances. I assume you are highly fit. Often when someone has fitness induced bradycardia it is even harder for them to reach HRmax, but it would seem that you have no problem. cceck whatever device you are using to measure HR, and get back to me. cheers

Hi, after measuring my max heartrate it is probably more like 206 3 beats higher than previously stated. I use a s720i polar heart rate monitor and it displays what i presume the correct heart rate after comparing it with a treadmill. This was my first distance running race and only about three weeks of specific training for the event. My fitness is founded upon cycling rather than running. Is this high heart rate just due to lack of running experience? most of my training was only around the 6 mile mark and the race was only my second post 8 mile run. When training i was running a lot faster than half marathon pace to try and get my muscles quickly accustomed to running. What type of training would you suggest to try improve running pace at a lower heartrate?
