Question:

How does one effectively lead a sports team to reach their goals?

It is so difficult to motivate a group of people into doing their best and sacrificing themselves for the team.

How do you motivate and lead the team, where different personalities are just expected? I find its hard to find a balance between harshness and patience. As if you work too harshly, hard-headed members will be motivated but the soft ones feel bullied. Where if you are too soft the opposite happens.

Hi there, for a successful team you need team dynamics. They all must want the same goal. Success, whether that is winning the league, the next game they need to be singing off the same song sheet, and you can co-ordinate that.

Now, this is where you come in as a coach. You will create a goal and then nurture each player to get the best out of them. As you said some will react better to 'bollockings' getting shouted at, some will need a quiet stern word, some react better to positive feedback etc etc... thats for you to find out about your players.

But like any goals, they need to be specific, achievable, agreed upon (if one does not agree, are they right for that team ??? probably not), measured and timed.

Once they get some success, they will be able to motivate themselves more.

Well, I think knowing how to COMMUNICATE SUCCESS is the main factor. For example, when you go to the bank, doctor or pharmacy, you DEMAND and EXPECT to be treated like an individual, so you require the person in front of you to listen to your concerns and respond with appropriate feedback that reflects your needs. YOU CAN'T COACH/MOTIVATE ALL ATHLETES THE SAME WAY. You have to understand what each of them NEED from you. Look at it from this perspective. Perhaps they are shy and reserved, or not terribly talented and feel very insecure, ...
Do you really think that being loud and forceful when you're talking to them will work?
Do you honestly believe that by pressuring them and giving them expectations for performance is going to 'make' them succeed?
If you want to get the best out of each of your athletes, you need to understand what motivates each of them to succeed!
