Question:

Healthy eating when on the road....

I spend 3-4 days per week travelling across the UK. The main issue is that, despite all the publicity about eating healthy, it is still extremely difficult to get a 'healthy' meal when on the road. At the moment, I am on a higher protein diet so it isn't so bad. However, the protein offered at service areas tends to be higher in fat with no real choice for a high protein and low fat alternative such as grilled chicken breast or turkey. Does anyone have any plans they use or suggestions for when on the road?

Hey

I know how tough it is to get healthy food while beeing on the road. I recommend you one thing: prepare your meals at home and take them with you. You have so many possibilites to keep the food fresh so this shouldn't be a problem. It takes a lot of organization but this is certainly the best way to eat healthy on the road and this is also one of the cheapest ways to eat.

I also travel frequently for business. Instead of stopping at a gas station (US) or restaurant, I go to the larger grocery stores/ supermarkets. Not sure what you have in UK that's equivalent; but every town has the place where locals go weekly for groceries. Takes less time than a restaurant, a bit more than a petrol stop. More choices, better food.

Either use disposable plates/utensils, or bring your own portables and clean up at the hotel.

Thanks. As an American living in the UK, I feel that the choice of places to eat when on the road in the UK seems to be a lot less than in the US. Granted we Americans are known as the most unhealthy people in the world but...whenever I am at home, I never fail to be able to find alternative places to eat. Here in the UK, once you are on the motorway you are pretty much locked into the rest areas every 20 miles or so. The exits are too far apart to allow for easy access on and off the motorway for food, etc. I don't see it being very easy over here. Now, back 30 years ago when I first came over and there wasn't motorways yet, it was a lot easier as there was access to village pubs, cafes, etc. That's all changed now.
