Question:

Rhomboids

Working as a physio with your sport minded athletes I've got a bit stuck advancing past the usual rehabilitation exercises, hopefully someone can give me some ideas of rhomboid specific exercises that will not activate the levator scapula - tall order but i need more specific exercises that will reduce my clients overactivity of his upper straps and levator scapula muscle for scapula retractions. Any ideas welcome thanks

I spend hours trying to prevent this type of injury in all of my athletes, i am actually currently writing an article on this subject.

Some exercises you may want to try:
Prone Y/T's with light dumbbells
Dip shrugs (only for advanced athletes)
Over head shrugs, great because they avoid irritation of the joint.
Wall slides, are simple and great.

These are just some at the top of my head. One thing you need to do is fix his imbalance in the push vs pull motion in the upper body. One question for thought if he is an athlete especially overhead throwing is he doing any vertical/horizontal pushing if so why? How heavy? What exercises?

thanks very much for the ideas - as to your question, he's a young lad who was given some really poor advice at a local gym and now has a wonderful muscle imbalance that really should be causing him pain but isnt, yet!. I guess you'd call this one a more medical intervention than sporting intervention, but with all my clients i tend to treat them all as a wanna be athlete!!

I know how it is, i started of in a similar manner. It is hard for a young person to get away from all of the crap advice in the gym. I actually published an article about mistakes made by most new athletes. I think it would be a great read and might even make you laugh. Well most of this information has come from my experience or shoulder problems. Good luck

People think it is but its all about athletic performance with an occasional nonsense article.
