Question:

How do i overcome the psychological aspects of repetitive injury??

I played rugby to quite a high level in the Welsh Premiership but over the past two seasons have incurred a mini nightmare, having broken my right leg in May 2006.

Spent a year on the sidelines in rehab following corrective surgery then returned to playing in the September 2007 and in my first game back broke my other leg, also requiring corrective surgery!!

Having gone through rehab once again I have started training for the forthcoming season but find myself not committing 100% to tackles and contact, with fear of the above happening again and its really frustrating me!

Wondered if anybody has been through the same type of thing and overcame this problem?? is there any good psychological techniques to overcome this problem?

Some tips:

-Search ways to interact with your teams (team meetings, strength training sessions).
-Talk with / read on other athletes who have successfully recovered and returned to sport.
-Ask for a professional help to keep control over the timing of your return, making sure you are returning for the right reasons at the right time not out of feelings of pressure.
-Establish realistic expectations and short-term
goals for recovery and return to play.

By addressing the mental aspects of injury and recovery, an athlete is more likely to have a healthy and productive return to the sport they enjoy so much. And after all, that is what success is all about.
