Is pronation normal and over-pronation is something that needs to be treated? Or at least remedied with running shoes specially designed for over-pronation?

All feet pronate,or should do.If you over pronate you should try a pair of stability/supportive trainers .If your pronation is severe then a pair of motion control trainers are needed.
If you are flat footed some custom made orthotics may be required.
See a podiatrist to be sure.Or just get your gait anaylised at a good running shop.Probably try the running shop first if you have not got awful flat feet like myself.
Happy running!
You should definitely get someone to have a look at your running if you're worried since over-pronation is hard to define absolutely. If you are getting pain in the ankles knees or hips when you run then that's a sign that what you have is a problem. If you are well balanced and your general posture is good and core is strong, then "if it ain't broke..." Even if you are over-pronating, it may ne that you have tightness that is contributing and a good flexibility programme and some soft tissue work could help.
Don't stop running though ;-)
