Orthotics?

Question:

Orthotics?

I supinate a lot and now that I'm training for a marathon, I'm noticing more and more that my sneakers really aren't a good fit or model for me. I am planning to get "fitted" at a well known running store in the area but I'm wondering if this is enough or if I need to look into orthotics? I really don't know if my insurance covers it so I'm not sure I'd even shell out for them if I do consider going that route. Would a specific running shoe be enough? Any experience similar to this?

It will all depend on each individual person, and the person/shop you go to see regarding your feet. Theoretically anti supination trainers should help with your feet problems, but if you have problems with the architecture of your feet, for example flat feet then i think its better to have a neutral shoe(nike Pegasus or Adidas supernova) with a good quality orthotic in them, I would then go and see a podiatrist,( ask family or friends for a recommendation).
I would check to make sure you are in fact running with excessive supination, 90% of people are over pronators.
i would also recommend you seeing a sports injuries health professional and ensure the the rest of your kinematic chain (back down to your feet) change is functioning properly, especially since you are training for a marathon, this will ensure optimum performance and training.

Thanks for that great answer! I had the exact same question (other than that I know I over-pronate).
