hello. when you say how emotional i assume you are talking about arousal levels. people are different and it is an immensely important factor as if u are over-aroused, u tighten up and are not controlling your body. under aroused and u are probably not focused. i think it was linford christie (may be wrong) said he 'ran scared'. You are either motivated through FEAR OF FAILURE or WILL TO WIN and therefore take risks.
its all about whats right for you. talk about it with your coach if you have one, if not then race your friends and see what feels best.
