Question:

100m time

hi,

I recently did a 100m on our rugby pitch whilst in rugby boots. It was also pretty muddy under foot and cold.I have been told that on a track in spikes in good conditions this could be a lot quicker. Most people say around 11.5s, but some say as low as 11s. Are these reasonable estimations?

Thanks

These are what they expect of people. Whether it's a good estimation or not just depends on you. Everybody is different and can only reach certain speeds. Your talent should outlook your speed. If you're not as fast, but you have more endurance, then you already beat everyone else. Don't worry about your time, just work your hardest and one day you will get that 11 or 11.5.

It’s also worth mentioning that in a game of rugby or most other field sports for that matter, you very rarely need to run 100m in one go. I think your estimations for track speeds are fair. I know on an astro hockey pitch in light boots compared to rugby boots I am a lot quicker. For your sport concentrate on explosive exercise, short steps for acceleration, ladder work for quick feet and change of direction, interval training, like shuttles to boost your bodies defence against lactic acid build up and improve your recovery and endurance. Something I struggle with.

World record is under just 10 seconds, so it would be a real har competition to reach 11, but i think it is possible if you are putting a good effort in reaching it !!

Well it really depends on your fitness level and your age....but I'd say it would be about right for an amateur

I used to be able to 11's on grass, when i was younger and in that sort of training. However the better times to compare are the 10m, 20m maybe 40m. these are the distances you are more likely to have to sprint in a game. also look at these with a slow rolling start as if at a pace you would be running in a game and then had to take off. rarely are you ever taking off from a standing start.
