Question:
How do I train for Steeplechase?
I always fancied having a go at this event, yes I am mad, but have no idea what training to do or exercises to improve my chances of getting over the hurdles.
I`m 46 and have been running for 8 years usually on the road at 10k to 1/2 marathon; during winter I run cross countries as well. Mile PB 6.47 and usual 10k 50 mins.

You would need to start doing some form of weight training to strengthen your leg muscles then I would start hitting the plyometrics, be prepared for the added strain on your joints that steeplechase will gift you with.

Dude I would first of get a hurdles coach. Most athletes lose so much time over the hurdle they cna never recover from this to catch more effective hurdlers. If you lose a second per hurdle and 2 seconds per water hurdle, then you could be losing around 5 second a lap to a technically weak hurdler and maybe more to someone very experienced. With 7.5 laps, that is close to 40 seconds. Sort the hurdling out first.
If you have never completed plyo's before, then throwing them wont help. Need to know when and how much to be successful. Strength training may assist you to avoid hip/leg collapsing over the hurdle but also improve running economy.
