Strength training will help your running, whether you are a distance runner or a sprinter. However, it is hard to gain muscle mass when you run many miles. Endurance strength training is best for distance runners, but if you are a sprinter, workouts that incorporate your quick twitch muscles are more beneficial.

my only strength training for running is push - ups, pullups, weighted crunches and back extensions, 3 sets of each.

Hipertrophy is part of the training, but watch out at activation time ;)
