Does Stretching aid the rehabilitation of a hamstring injury?

I am currently studying to become a sports therapist in Glasgow. i have been giving a report to do and this is what i am investigating. Any information would be great.

think about the mechanics of the injury and the mechanics and purposes of stretching - are you looking at any type of stretching in particular?
when i was doing my ST degree i did a lot of stretching with the American Footballers we worked with and found that in those who picked up hamstring injuries, it helped reduce the occurance.
i'd say that stretching and flexibility is more or less vital in the rehab of any muscle group - especially those which are typically tight - such as hamstrings.

I assume you are talking about static stretching? Stretching has not be found to be clinically significant in the rehab of injury alone if at all nor has it been shown to reduce the occurance of injury. Tight muscles are not necessarily predisposed to injury and the tightness is a requirement of the sport such as sprints. Therefore tightness is benificial.
A pulled muscle is where a section of the fibres have been over stretched causing a rupture of the tissue. The scar tissue will need to be removed and the fibres remodelled which can be completed by soft tissue massage. Stretching this area may actaully be causing more damage. I am not an acute rehab expert but have worked long enough with sports med practitioners and athletes and been involved in end stage rehab to see that high and low load conditioning/loading has a more profound affect on the injured area than stretching alone.

I actually did my dissertation on the effect of massage on hamstring flexibility of Sprinters, versus stretching alone (many years ago!). There was a bit of research on Pub med, and the professional publications of physiotherapy in sport, sport and exercise therapy and a few other I can't remember off the top of my head. If you are stuck for articles email me and I will try and pull out a few names for you.
Submitted 1 week 18 hours ago by physiorouteBe warned research on flexibility and stretching is quite poor, but the rule of thumb is dynamic stretching prior to activity, and then static stretching post activity as part of a warm down, you should never stretch statically pre event / training as you lose stability with the new range you achive.
