Question:

Swimming under water

Has anyone had experience of training to swim under water for distance? I heard it helps develop your cardiovascular system (If you don't black out).

I have done similar training to this as it apparently increases lung capacity which I find is true in my case but may vary with different people. The program I used involved swimming underwater in the pool for as long as possible with long breaks followed by: swimming underwater for as long as possible, sprint swim back as fast as possible then go again with no break till basically you are so out of breath you can only just manage to push off before having to surface to take a breath. Try it, if it works then it works and all is good :)

What really develops your cardiovascular system is using it e.g. aerobic training. What hypoxic training (under water or normal swimming with reduced breath) is teach you breath control. Most people think they need to breathe more frequently than they really do while swimming. Learning to control your breath and breath to both sides when you choose, really can help your stroke. Also, you then don't panc and rush to the surface after turns.
