Question:
Coaches: do your athletes get assessed?
Asked by tony mess - 4 answers - 9 weeks 2 days ago
Am just wondering how often , if at all , athletes get their fitness assessed. Is there a gap in the market for a place where all athletes, runners.. footballers, tennis players etc can go to get assessed esp up here in the north of england..Im really interested in doing something like that but need to know what the possible demand is.

if i were you i would check if there arent any rules stating for each thalete in every sport when he should get assessed and what should the examination include. i know that in israel there are some very clear rules about the subject and also that there are such rules in many other countries.

Most if not all Olympic sports have specialist practitioners across a variety of sports medicine and science working for their elite programmes either through their national governing body or through the home country institutes (EIS, SINI, SIS). This work is undertaken by them. Sports vary so much that there is little crossover from sport to sport for a large amount of assessments. Assessments also include a wide variety of methods for different outcomes (fitness, conditioning, injury, movement etc). There maybe gaps in markets for low level or recreational athletes not on world class plans. Also many universities tend to do a lot of testing as they have facilities and staff.

thanks for that Alex,,ye im looking really at low level for now just to see the demand. My MSFT projecj that i was doing with local footballers got a real bad response, it didnt seem as if managers were botherf about their players fitness..or maybe my approach was too soft..But im not given up and will once again phone around. Thanks aga

Hello Tony, I work with age group recreational athletes and youth/junior athletes. I mostly work with endurance sports. We do assess our athletes. We are applying the following tests:
Runners:
Cooper test (12 min run) very easy useful test to do almost anywhere flat that can be measured and make sure that all the tests are done on the same place at the same time.
This is done every 4- 6 weeks depending on races. We use the data from total distance, max HR, Rec HR after 1 min and rec HR after 2 minutes. It helps us establish if they are improving and if their recovery time is improving too.
Also we measure sit ups, abdominals and push ups in one minute.
Triathletes same tests as above plus an ergometer (Computrainer)test every 2-3 months and a T20 or T30 swim test depending on swimming ability.
With Junior athletes we add a 10 x100 swim test with a specific protocol to measure aerobic function, anaerobic threshold, and best 100 meter. And a swim quality test with a swim metronome. We also measure 400 meters run and 1000k meter run.
The tests not only provide useful info regarding improvement, adaptation to the program. It is also great for motivating the athletes and helps us establish training HR zones and velocity.
