I'm running my first marathon and the course has several downhills early on. Comments I have read often say many runners hit the wall 3/4 of the way through as their muscles are fatigued from the deceleration of the downhills. Other than training on similar hills, how can one prepare for this?

My advice would be to relax down the hills and try not to let them do too much damage. Eccentric contraction (the extension of your knee when running down hill) causes the most damage of any type of contraction and therefore you need to minimise it during your race. It is a good idea for you to practice on similar hills as this will help you adapt to the damage it causes.
