Question:

I cant seem to lose weight

I need to realistically lose 10 pounds to a stone in weight, now i know muscle ways heavier than fat but my bodyfat is still 30% and i weight 12st 5 and im 5 ft 8 and a woman....i do naturally have a high propensity to gain muscle however im still overweight and i want to lose this outer layer....trouble is i have tried everything, even recently herbalife and didnt lose a pound in a fortnight.....i have tried no carbs after 4pm and didnt lose anything either.....on average i consume around 15oo calories a day so i figure i have just stuffed up my metabolism completely so am starting to eat again normally. How is it that fat people can lose weight easily and yet i train very hard 2-3 days a week and cant seem to shift it....i need some professsional advice please before i lose the will! Im willing to pay for a service so i can resolve this.....my doc has just ordered bloods so am waiting for the results and i should say i have only just become fully fit after a lengthy recovery from a car accident and subsequent knee op.

Hello zoetaylor,
First I ask, how was your body fat percentage(BFP) measured? If it was with your height and bodyweight, calculation then it may not be right. A more sure way is with calipers. Also you didn't tell us your age. So I will give you a lean and an ideal pecentage for a woman of 26-30 years old. Lean would be 19% and Ideal 24%
You said you body fat measured 30% that means, taking your body weight to be 173lbs. you are carrying 51 lbs. of fat.
My advice is to train 3 times a week for periods of 1 hour. First half hour on light weights 2 sets of 15 repetitions, and the other Half hour the rowing machine or cross trainer and or bike. (No gaps for talking)
If you eat good carbs, fats and protein you should shape up well and shed a few pounds.
If you want an example program let me know.

Zoe,

Assuming your bloods come back clear, dont despair to much. Remember that the heavier someone is the greater the effect that diet/exercise will have. A healthy weight loss for someone who is only slightly overweight is about 2Ibs a week.

The above advice sounds ideal, only other things I'd suggest is starting with a 10 min warm-up before you start the weights. The other thing to consider is the timing of your exercise. I know a few people you have felt that exercising in the mornin rather than later has helped kick start their metabolism and weight loss.

Good luck! Dont give up!

My body fat is 26% not 30% i used the calipers.......but i still want to lose 10 pounds as its hanging on my waist and tummy.......legs and bum are fab and happy with my chest too but carrying all round my mid riff.

I havent done too much too soon, i can exerise for long periods of time but i can only go to the gym 3 times a week max....i go for about an hour and twenty....i do two lots of cardio, first one for 20 mins to warm up then a circuit of weights which are a good weight but not to the point of exhaustion then towards the end before abs and cool down i do a further 10 mins of intense cardio....for cardio i either run, row or eliptical trainer...

I also walk my dog each night as fast as my dog will allow as she is getting old. My job is sedentary but generally once i get in from work i dont stop until i go to bed....

Im 37 years old and have had two kids, i have a great diet, balanced and healthy but unlike years before this i cant lose this extra weight i gained after my accident.
Any help and advice is gratefully received....should have my results back on weds from the doc......

Thanks

Zoe

once the light mornings come i will really make the effort to get out in the morning just for a run at least...i cant run too much yet though but i could walk the dog at least on the days i dont want to run...thats why i like the cross trainer so much as there is no impact on my knees.....

I would love to lose 1 to 2 pounds a week.......its just not happening....lol

Hello zoe..ok ..first thing i do notice is ur cardio.20mins warmup + 10mins cool down total of 30mins.Lets concentrate on this, how hard do u train (cardio).u may need to push alittle harder. ir there any ETM classes u can go to twice a wk 4 a month. Go and try a good fat burning class . spinning. boxercise for example or what about circuits. You may just need that little bit push by some one. Buy a pedometer to see if u can do 10000 steps a day, keep up the weights which is good for weight loss.I av takin note of your personnal info to get some figures for u, cals . protein carbs fat etc...lets know wht the doc says until then dont worry kp training and be proud of urself. u want to lose the extra weight + ur willing to do smthng about it...HOLD THE KNIFE YOU CAN DO THIS WITHOUT IT ok zoe

Zoe according to my fìgures, to maintain ur weight u need to be eaten 2470kcals- to lose fat reduce this by NO MORE than 15% which is about 2000kcals....carbs-275g, 55%, 1100kcals-----protein, 110g, 22%, 440kcals-----fat, 40g, 18%. 360kcals. This small reduction in cals will avoid a metabolic slowdown, the high protein intake will help with any lean tissue loss. How does this compare with wht u r eating now Zoe ?

You're not eating enough! I know that sound bizzare but tony mess is right: 1500 calories a day isn't enough! Have a day off of the diet and pamper yourself, every two weeks and enjoy it! This will help your esteem aswell as preventing your body from going into starvation mode.

Also, try eating 5 small meals a day and read up on food combining: you say your bum and chest are fab and that it's just your tummy you're concerned with? maybe you're mixing the wrong food groups at meal times causing digestive problems. Avoid eating starchy complex carbohyrates with meat or fish.

Brown rice and/ wild rice with vegetables, beans and lentils contain enough fibre, carbs and protien without confusing your stomach!

Chicken with ratatouille and nuts tossed in salad is also a delisious choice!

Make sure you contain a sensible quantity of good fats- especially olive oil.

A fantastic form of exercise for women especially is dancing as it has multible health benefits: it is proven to elevate mood and confidence whilst burning calories! It improves suppleness and flexibility. (And from eperience does wonders for your sex life too) ;)

I find it slightly concerning that you are using calipers to measure your body fat! I've always found this method a bit extreme! Remember, you are a woman! we are supposed to have a slight pincable layer of fat on our bodies: We are designed to create and protect life! If you strip away every single morsel of fat you are putting you reproductive organs at risk!

I hope this helps. Good luck to you and I hope you achieve everything you want! :)

Zoe,
Please be careful with your weight loss. I loss over 5 stone in the past, after many attempts. I have been able to keep it off for 6 years...the reason(s).

1. In the past I equated severely reduced calorie intake with weight loss. FACT...stop eating and the chances are that your body will go into starvation mode and the wgt loss will stop or even be reversed.

2. Exercise...the quickest way to loose weight, in my opinion, is to run. I started by walking briskly (all of 1/4 mile) and slowly worked my way up to the level I am at now. Please don't do this unless cleared by your doc.

3. Balance of your diet. As someone else pointed out, you need to manage the %'s of carbs, fat and protein. This will be based on what level activity you are doing and your planned results.

Good luck.

Grumpy

Hi Zoe, I agree with Grumpy59. You need to manage % of carbs, fat and protein. I was never able to lost weight too but it all changed when I started training for my first half marathon. I guess all the running really helps. I lost 20 lbs thanx to running. I was running four days, cross train for two days and total rest for one day. Weight training is during cross train days. I run for about one hour. All the Best =)
