The ACL is the ANTERIOR CRUCIATE LIGAMENT in the knee

Look it up in an anatomy book to see how it works and how important it is to the stability of the knee.
If damaged it can be rehabilitated with rest and appropriate exercise but if torn completely it needs surgery. A sports med doc can diagnose how seriously it is injured.
