Question:

What are best core exercises to do for high school track team.

I have use of gym floor in early season and the football field later on. We are a small school with no med balls, ladders or other equipment. And if I need to have a piece of equipment what would be the best to invest in?
I am just finishing my first year as track coach, and I have no assistants.

Hi, the best use you can make is literally the athletes you are training. As a coach, u need to remember that the body only recognises 7 movements:
push, pull, deadlift, squat, lunge, twist and gair (run). therefore, u should do planty of hip flexion exericses - squat thrusts, high knees, plyometric jumping. also twisting exercises, where they twist and rotate at the middle. Do these standing or lying down. And u can add some weight by adding a dumbbell or a med ball. i am a huge fan of the cable machines by "Life Fitness". Dunno if i am allowed to say their name but hey.... you can do absolutely everything on there but obviously will depend on club finances. Last of all... PLANK get them to plank... then extend the time to demonstrate their core strength gains. Then to progress further, plank and extend opposing limbs - left arm, right leg etc...

Good luck and ask your finance committee member for some cash to invest!!!

Basic exercises: Planks, Quadrupeds, V-ups, Glute Bridge..... You can progress to unilateral versions. It really depends on what events you're working with. More speed or Field Events: 100, 200m...? Plyo's are a great way to develop "Core" srength and stability.
Endurance: 1600, 3200m...? Same as above but obviously change the time.
As far as equipment: Dynamx Med Balls are great!

One of the cheapest and most versatile pieces of "normal" training equipment has got to be a stability ball. You can probably buy enough for the entire team for less than a new cable machine. Teammates can practice any number of core exercises with these balls. Of course, the movements are not particularly sport-specific.

For sport specific movement, simple resistance bands work amazingly well. You can even loop one around a runner and have him/her pull a teammate along.

I have no doubt your imagination will quickly provide you with endless variations with these two pieces of equipment!
