Question:

What are some good exercises to do for abs? I just had knee surgery?

I just had my lateral meniscus repaired and I cant swim for three months. But I'm training for a meet in Hawaii at the moment and this is a big hit on my training. So since I cant swim I want to really work on my abs. I already do a really hard ab workout every night but I cant do it with my knee brace. Is there any woukouts, out there, that I could do by myself that I can do with a restrictive brace on my left knee? If so where?

How much restriction is there on flexion/extension of the knee?

Pilates-type exercise might just be best for the core workouts. Might I also add, make sure that you correspond with your physiotherapist, exercise the gluteal muscles in particular as they tend to weaken with knee injuries.

When I dislocated my knee, I was really annoyed that I couldn't train either. Some exercises that I could manage that didn't cuase me that much difficlty or pain were: Sit-ups' only, lie on your back with your legs straight not bent, and hold a medicine ball or similar weight between your hands, hugged to your stomach. Then do normall sit-ups leaning as far forward as possible without it stretching your kneekeeping the ball off your legs, or do the same without the ball and reach forward until you touch your toes then go all the way back till your shoulders touch the floor.

Another exercise that I did was leg raises, I found that as long as I put a cushion under my legs so it didnt hit the floor i was fine. Lie on your back in front of your sofa, hold the bottom lip of the sofa with your hands above your head, then lift your legs keeping them at least 6 inches off the floor and not letting them more than about 45 degrees higher than your waist.

Both these exercises are great for working on your abdominals even when you dont have an injury, but you should still check with your doctor before doing any kind of exercise or you could put your recovery off by at least 6 weeks quite easily.

Hope I could help....
