What defines a top sportsman/woman?

A discussion I had with some of my students today, thought I'd ask on here see what sort of responses I get...

What do you think makes a top Sports person, I mean, what characteristics would you say defines them?

For me, its the fact they play sport, for sports sake, by that I mean, they could be playing any sport, anywhere, and regardless of whether they win or loose, the fact that they have played is enough for them to be satisfied and happy. They are humble in success, and graceful in defeat. The first one on the pitch, and the last to leave. They train hard regardless of the conditions...
