The female triad consists of a pattern of disordered eating, i.e. anorexia, or bulimia, both of which can be fatal if left unattended. The second leg of the triad, Amenorrhea is the condition of not having a menstrual cycle for three consecutive months in a row. This can lead to a loss of bone mineral density which moves us into the last portion of the triad; Osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a weakening of the bone structure ultimately leading to fractures. Common fracture sites are seen in the wrist, hip and spinal column.

If you are training a female athlete who competes in weight classes then pay particular attention to their body weight and eating habits. You are in a position to save their life if you are conscious of these debilitating diseases.
