It's been a problem for me since I have bow shaped legs. You really have to keep your IT bands stretched. At the moment I'm trying to fix my Gerdy's tubercle, which is also related to tight IT bands. I also need shoes that fix a supinate stride.

You are susceptible to ankle sprains and shin splints due to the instability of your lower legs.
Possibly seek the advice of a pediatrist who can correct your posture to some extend but I think your stuck with it.
You can obviously do a lot to prevent it becoming a problem i.e. strengthening exercises etc.
