Broken Ankle

Hi
Have found this site very helpful ( and amusing) so thought I would add my story :-

Broke my ankle on the 2nd Jan 2010 whilst walking in Glencoe at new year.Ambulance called but needed the mountain rescue.9 Hunky men and one very fit lady (no helicopter though!) Did an excellent job.Husband knew it was broken and dislocated by the funny angle of my foot but our friend,s dog very kindly jumped on it and put the dislocation back into place !!That hurt but surprisingly when asked by the ambulance driver I only rated the pain at 4-5 out of 10 and my husband said my colour returned from white to healthy quite quickly!
I was transported to the Hospital at Fort William who confirmed broken in 3 places including a tallor shift Apparently they don't do pinning and plating there so it was Inverness or back to Dumfries. Chose Dumfries and travelled back in the Motor home to Dumfries! Busy??? Had to wait 2 days to move to fracture ward. The whole area was affected by the extreme cold and lack of gritting. Apparently Carlisle ran out of plaster of paris!!!
Anyhow operation on 6th pinned and plated, went home on the 8th.Quite impressed by Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary.Very thorough and kind despite pressure of work. Consultant said operation went well and I should be back to normal in 3 months. 3 months!!!!!! I thought 6 weeks, cast off, walking as normal!!!! Didn't realise that a broken ankle was so serious and never having had broken a bone before did not know what to expect.

Frustration and boredom !! Can't do anything for yourself ,counting down the minutes to the next hospital visit. Same rubbish on TV and if I see another sudoku i'll scream!!! 20th Jan had slab removed and staples taken out(ouch!) and light weight cast put on. Anyhow all bad things come to an end and on Friday 19th Feb .I had my cast off, I could have kissed the nurse when she said it was coming off.

I didn't have a lot of discomfort when the cast was on apart from the swelling but once off foot was quite puffed up, doctor gave some exercises and said physio would be arranged. Tried to get me on my feet. Foot O.K. on floor but could not put pressure on it, didn't feel like my foot . I once had plantar fasciatis and my heel felt just the same. Anyhow came home ,long hot bath to remove some of that dried skin. Doctor said heat was better that ice now fracture was on the mend.

I want to be mobile ASAP so using the walker to walk reducing pressure on foot, rotating ankle and then resting foot up. Mobility can't come soon enough as this so far has been the worst 7 weeks of my life!!

Would appreciate any tips or advice to speed things up.

Hi Wendy,

Interesting to read your story, broke both ankles last sunday falling down a few concrete stairs.

Right leg had to be pinned etc to be honest was so painful at the time will have to wait for next hospital appointment to see exactly what was done, left leg was not operated on but also in plaster with two brakes but is weight bearing.

Home from hospital on the friday and already going stir crazy, not used to being dependant on anyone and finding it hard not to do anything so emotions are running high at times.

Will be interested to see how things turn out for you

Mandy
