Inaugural Rose Bowl Half Marathon
I was still recuperating from a bicycle crash and did not finish the planned
training before the race, but had ran the distance slowly.
Lined up at the Pre-registration window about 7:25 AM; got to the window at
about 7:55-received a number, but they had no 'chip' for the number. Was sent
to solutions line. Recived new number and 'chip' ran to bicycle to dump the t-shirt & warmup pants and jacket-goody bag?-no-they were out. Just before I left
the bike I hear a noise the race has started-no problem-we have a 'chip'.
Was one of the last starters, but the field is spread out only small delays passing runners until the narrow dirt trail accessed through a gate just before
the 'Jet Propulsion Laboratorys' turnstyle. I seemed to drag a little anyway
so did not force a pass. Got back and listened to the awards for 5K, then found
the table where the results were posted, but could not find mine. I'm told they
go by 'Gun' time. So what were those 'chips' for? Obviously my chip time was not
close to my 'gun' time. Fortunately I was not fast enough to win in either case.
How about a BAN on 'Gun' time if a chip is used just to be fair. With 2,000
people everyone cannot be at the starting line for that 'Gun' start.
