Is there anyone out there who does not want a piece of British boxer Joe Calzaghe? After 25 years of boxing Calzaghe has announced he will retire after his fight with Roy Jones at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night. However it appears that his announcement to hang up his gloves has provoked several boxing stars into seeking out the chance to fight him.
The most high profile of the names is US boxer Bernard Hopkins who is keen to avenge the narrow loss he suffered to Calzaghe in April. Hopkins is so eager for a rematch he stated that he would fly to England in a bid to face him. The opponent Hopkins recently demolished, Kelly Pavlik, is also rumoured to want to fight Calzaghe and WBA super-middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler is the latest challenger to publicly declare his interest.
However the 36-year-old Welshman seems to be sticking to his guns "I've been boxing 25 years, I'm 37 in March and I don't want to start looking like a fighter”. Considering he has been fighting for over 25 years Calzaghe has done extremely well to avoid the fate of a disfigured face, something which often befalls many boxers.
Aside from the potential mental problems that boxers can sustain as a result of one too many concussions fighters are generally left with superficial injuries. In most cases both boxers are likely to end a bout with cuts, swellings and bruising. Initially these will recover but repetitive injuries can result in scarring and permanent disfigurement. Boxers can end their career with broken teeth, cauliflower ears and misshaped noses. However providing Calzaghe escapes Saturday night unscathed he will end his career without a scratch on him with no physical sign that he ever stepped in the ring!
If Calzaghe wins he will retire undefeated in 46 fights as a professional, having dominated the super middleweight division for over a decade. However for a man about to enter retirement he is certainly not going out quietly "I only like to come out and fight the big names and we're running out of big names”. With this in mind don’t be surprised if you see Calzaghe making a big money comeback in the not too distant future!
