Hi
I am currently training for the London Marathon and have developed what i think are shin splints. I have quite a good base of fitness as i have been training the last 4 months.
My question is would it be advisable for me to stop running completely until race day and only cross train in the gym and underwater run . Would i maintain my fitness level enough to complete the marathon. would 3and a half weeks rest be sufficient for a shin splint
Over the last 2 weeks my long runs were a 21 mile and a 17 mile - previous to that a half marathon and 2 x 12 mile runs - the rest of my training has been 7 mile runs track work and some fartleks - enough preperation - i'm not sure
Over the last 2 weeks each run i have gone on the shin splints seem to be slightly more painful and last for longer each time
What would be your best recomendation
Cheers
Gary

Shin pain
Shorten your stride length and avoid heel strike.

Shin Pain
Be sure you have very good flexibility in you calves. the tightness in the heel and achilles tendon can add to stress when you run. The tenderness of the shins progressively getting worse is telling you to ease up. I would do the running in the pool to take pressure off the legs for at least one week. You can still do the stationary bike to help maintain you conditioning, just be sure to not pull the toe clip up with the toes, use the thighs. Also do the following as often as possible, 4-5 times daily. Get a styrofoam cup, fill it with water and put it in the freezer. Once frozen, peel off the top half inch of cup, rub the ice on the shin for 15-20 minutes. the combination of ice and massage will help reduce the inflammation. The cup will also make it easier to hold, so you don't freeze your hand.
Good luck in the marathon.
